Shortly after the Brexit vote, its effects on the UKIPO (UK Intellectual Property Office) and EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) started to be noticed. The impact is going to be even bigger on some EU IP rights once the Brexit will actually be enforced, only if by that time no other arrangements will be negotiated between the EU and UK.
Nowadays, a gentile decline was noticed in the number of patent application made at the UKIPO after the Brexit vote. All the while, the number of applications at the European Patent Office continued to raise.
Regarding the design applications at the UKIPO, if they’re number was steady from 2003 to 2014, since the Brexit vote it has risen. Also, the number of trademark applications increased significantly due to the applications coming from UK residents, although non-resident applications number at the UKIPO have also risen.
